Explore Unique Masonry Projects Completed by Lennox Masonry in Victoria, BC Are you a homeowner located in Victoria, BC and interested in renovating the interior or exterior of your home with a reputable and professional masonry company? From maintenance and repairs to transforming your living space, let’s take a look at some of the masonry projects we’ve completed here at Lennox Masonry and how we can help give your home and property a new look! Maintenance & Repairs: Chimney Repointing and Rebuilding: Victoria, BC is home to thousands of homes which still utilize brick and stone chimneys, most of which are in disrepair for one reason or another. The first line of defense for these chimneys is what masonry contractors refer to as the crown, or top of the chimney. Chimney crowns are subject to our wet climate here on Vancouver Island and that weather tends to work itself between the flue liners and the mortar or concrete at the top of the chimney. That water and moisture then remains trapped, freezes and expands through the seasons and then contracts, leading to a separation between the mortar and brick or stonework. When that occurs, it’s imperative to build a new concrete crown or cap and repoint the chimney. What is repointing? Repointing is the process of removing a certain amount of the current mortar from between the bricks or stones that make up a wall or chimney and replacing it fresh mortar. For a detailed overview of the repointing process, check out our blog post here. If you're interested in receiving an assessment and consultation from Lennox Masonry for your chimney, please click here! What does replacing a concrete crown entail? Replacing a cap or crown of a chimney entails removing the current crown, potentially replacing the flue liners, and then forming and pouring a new concrete cap in place that aligns with the building codes and requirements dictated by both the City of Victoria and Canadian chimney building codes. Stone & Brick Retaining Walls: Stone and brick retaining walls in Victoria, BC are also subject to not only our rainy seasons but also additional sources such as sprinklers and irrigation. The leading cause of failure for these masonry structures is a lack of drainage which leads to the same issues that chimneys also suffer from. These walls will either need repointing or to be rebuilt with drainage in mind. For more information on repointing and repairing stone and brick retaining walls, please read this blog post here. Renovating Your Home and Property with Stone and Brick: Thin Stone Veneer and Thin Brick Veneer: One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of modernizing your home is by applying thin stone or brick veneer to a feature wall, fireplace, or the exterior of your home. - Creating Your Ideal Outdoor Living Space in Victoria, BC
Combining functionality and aesthetics: Building flagstone patios and stone walkways with Lennox Masonry in Victoria, BC Victoria, BC is not only home to one of the mildest climates in Canada but it is also home to picturesque landscapes littered with natural stone outcrops along the coastline and sprawling views of the Olympic Mountain Range. Those two qualities alone make Victoria an ideal environment for both stonemasons and homeowners alike. Out of all the projects we work on each year here at Lennox Masonry, building outdoor living spaces out of stone is what we are known for. If you’re like many other homeowners in Victoria, BC that are looking to extend your living area, one of the best ways to enhance your outdoor space is by incorporating flagstone, a versatile and durable material that adds functionality and natural beauty to any landscape. Let's explore how Lennox Masonry can help you create a beautiful flagstone patio or walkway that will stand the test of time in Victoria's unique environment. Why Choose Flagstone? Flagstone is an excellent choice for outdoor spaces in Victoria for several reasons: Durability: Flagstone can withstand Victoria's varied weather conditions, from rainy winters to dry summers. And due to its coarse nature, it is a relatively non-slip surface. Natural beauty: Vancouver Island has several stone quarries which produce unique, local flagstones out of indigenous rock that compliment and match the colours and textures naturally occurring in stone outcrops found throughout Victoria. Versatility: Flagstone is best used for patios, walkways, and garden paths where a level surface is desired. Designing Your Flagstone Space When planning your outdoor living area, consider the following: Layout: Designing a space that flows naturally with your existing landscape and home is easily accomplished with the addition of flagstone. Pattern: Flagstones come in two main styles: random and tumbled. Random flagstones are inconsistent when it comes to their edges, shapes, and sizes. Whereas tumbled flagstones have a much greater degree of uniformity to them. Colour: Locally quarried flagstones on Vancouver Island are rich with grey, blue, and brown colours with hints of quartz and iron throughout. However, most stone distributors also import flagstones from all over North America, providing you with plenty of choices when it comes to accenting or complimenting the colours present on your home and surrounding property. Installation Process Here's a brief overview of how Lennox Masonry typically installs a flagstone patio or walkway in Victoria: Layout: First we determine what type of functionality and design is required. Based on that, we will recommend a certain thickness of flagstone to suit those needs. If it’s a patio, we typically pour concrete and use a thinner flagstone. If it’s a garden pathway, we will typically use a thicker flagstone which doesn’t require a concrete foundation. Excavation: We start by digging about 6"-7" deep to create a solid foundation for the flagstone. Base preparation: We then lay a sturdy compacted base of compacted gravel and sand, better known as road base. Concrete: When it comes to flagstone patios for entertaining, it is crucial to use concrete as a secondary base to ensure no movement in the flagstones and for drainage purposes. Stone selection: The fun part! You get to choose which style and type of flagstone you would prefer for your new outdoor living space. Placement: Based on the design preferences, Lennox Masonry and our team of skilled stonemasons will either cut and chisel the stones to meet perfectly or keep them natural while maintaining a level and cohesive surface. Filling gaps: Depending on the application, we will then either introduce mortar or another aggregate to fill the spaces between stones. Enhancing Your Flagstone Space To create a truly inviting outdoor living area: Add comfortable seating and outdoor furniture to make the space functional. Incorporate landscaping elements like plants and shrubs to soften the hardscape. Consider adding features like a fire pit or outdoor lighting for ambiance. Install a pergola or awning for shade and protection from the elements. Maintenance Tips To keep your flagstone patio or walkway looking beautiful for years to come: Regularly sweep and rinse the surface to remove debris. Let Lennox Masonry apply a high-quality sealant to protect the stone from stains and to bring out the natural colours within the flagstone itself. Whether you're hosting summer barbecues or enjoying a quiet morning coffee, let Lennox Masonry build you a new flagstone patio or walkway to provide a beautiful and durable foundation for your new outdoor living space in Victoria, BC today! - Backyard Flagstone Renovation Project in Victoria, BC
Renovating Your Backyard Using Flagstone In Victoria, BC With Lennox Masonry Flagstone has always been and likely will remain one of the best options for creating beautiful outdoor living spaces, walkways, and garden paths. Here at Lennox Masonry, we use flagstone dozens of times each year for outdoor hardscaping projects and the end-result is always spectacular. Luckily, here on Vancouver Island, we have access to several stone quarries which produce unique looking flagstones that fit right in with the natural occurring stone outcrop present throughout the island. For this particular outdoor renovation project in Victoria, BC, we decided to use a San Juan Flagstone which is a mixture of grey and blue colours with a hint of quartz which is a signature of the stone here on Vancouver Island. This flagstone comes in varying thicknesses between 3/8ths of an inch to 3 inches. When it comes to handling these flagstones, given their large footprint, I recommend that when working with any thickness of 1.5” and beyond that a skid steer be utilized to transport them across the job site, or, at the very least, a stone dolly. Unfortunately, due to the tight working space on this project, we had access to neither and some brute strength was all that would suffice. Needless to say, our backs needed a long break afterwards! The ultimate vision for this masonry job was to extend the outdoor living space while maintaining a balance between function and aesthetics. After laying down string lines and mapping the backyard, we proceeded to pour a 6” concrete slab as a foundation for the flagstone. Once the concrete had fully cured, we then began laying down our 2-3” thick flagstones in such a way that the pieces aligned as best as possible. Once they were all in place, we then cut each one down to ensure that they would fit as tightly as possible while also maintaining enough space for mortar joints. Once the edges had been completed, we decided to create a unique stone feature out of river rocks and emulate patterns found in nature, such as the flow of a river and tree’s roots. For this design, we utilized local river rocks of various sizes and stood them upright, ensuring that they wouldn’t stick up too far beyond the level of the flagstone. The end-result was a beautiful, unique patio rich with colours, depth, and character. Lennox Masonry of Victoria, BC has been proudly serving both Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands for over a decade. We are small group of skilled masons with a great deal of passion towards our trade and for improving the communities we live and work in. - Making Art From Stone
I have always enjoyed both the aesthetic and feel of pairing stone with wood and plants. The contrasting qualities between the three only helps to amplify each of their individual characteristics. Being a stonemason for the past 20 years in Victoria, BC, designing and building stone walls, features, and hardscaping properties for hundreds of clients, I decided it might be nice to start utilizing leftover stones and materials to create art out of. For this piece, I wanted to include all 4 elements in the making of it so I began with a burnt, rough-cut cedar frame. I then incorporated river rocks, driftwood, moss, and a variety of air plants. All of the materials used in this piece are native to Vancouver Island. Once completed, I then installed this piece within a stone retaining wall that I was building for a client located in Brentwood Bay. It made for a nice feature overlooking the view of the ocean. Over the years of practicing stonemasonry and bricklaying, I have been able to incorporate a variety of features within stone and brick walls to make them entirely unique and special. These are just a few of those projects... - Building Stone Walls & Pillars in Mill Bay, BC with Lennox Masonry
Stone is a timeless material which humanity has utilized for both functional and aesthetic purposes throughout our collective history. It’s uses are multi-faceted and seemingly endless. The act of working with stone creatively, forces the mind to fixate on shapes and patterns, forming perceptions and habits until a stonemason is able to look at a pile of rubble on the ground and see through to its ultimate potential. When it comes to designing and building unique stone features for clientele, apart from the clients vision and preferences, as well as my own, I find that the type of stone being worked with really gets the last say as to what style and shape it will take on. In that sense, the stone itself has completed most of the guesswork and it is now up to the stonemason to fine-tune and discover the how, why, when, and where. There is a relationship forming between the material and the sculptor so to speak without a word being spoken. In a way, becoming a mature stonemason is really the art of learning how to perceive the possibilities inherent in the stones and allowing yourself to be guided by those possibilities while the stones do the same. Though, in my experience, there are times when the stones don’t always want to go along with my vision and make it rather difficult for me to accomplish my task by breaking in unfortunate ways while being molded by my hammer. In essence, we don’t always see eye to eye, and maybe that’s because I can be stubborn and unwilling to stray from my desired outcome… we’ll never know! Mill Bay, BC is a small commuter town located in the Cowichan Valley Regional District and is so aptly named for the fake that the community formed around a sawmill in the bay during the 1860’s. Here you’ll find marinas and sprawling views of the Saanich Inlet, as well as Brentwood Bay. The following stone walls and pillars are located along the Saanich Inlet and are visible from the main road in Mill Bay. You guessed it! Mill Bay Road. The client was interested in having some stone retaining walls built in order to house a garden and two stone pillars to create an entryway. We settled on the use of local river rocks, Pacific Blue Sandstone, coarse sand, and natural hydraulic lime to bring it all together. The client wished to introduce lighting on or around the pillars and I recommended building recessed archways into the stone pillars from which lights could hang down from the top. The ground was trenched out and PVC piping was laid to ensure a safe and reliable power source from the electrical box through to the pillars. Concrete foundations were formed and poured as a sturdy foundation from which the stone walls and pillars could be erected. Once the foundations had fully cured, the stonework began in earnest. Both the pillars and the retaining walls were built incrementally due to the weight of the stones and the malleability of the lime-based mortar. Natural Hydraulic Lime is a traditional mortar and takes much longer to cure than modern day Portland cement-based mortars. So, while building a wall or pillar up, the stones and the mortar need ample time to set together before any further weight can be introduced. Otherwise, stones start sliding around and things become uneven. As far as creating curves in stone walls is concerned, I have found over the years that the best way to form even curves is actually with small irrigation pipes tied into wood stakes. It beats a string line and is fairly straightforward. The arches in the pillars required some additional formwork and several unique stones were selected for the interiors of the pillars to add some depth and creativity to the overall design. After everything had time to settle, the stone walls and pillars were capped with a Pacific Blue Sandstone which was quarried and cut by BC Marble Products here on Vancouver Island. They were also able to provide a large stone which was used as an address sign on the main retaining wall. Lastly, the stones were sealed to highlight their colours and intricacies, and bring the project to life! This project took several months to complete due to the weight of the stones, nature of the lime-based mortar, weather delays, and because it began around the same time Lennox Masonry was restoring the city hall in Duncan, BC which took up most of my mental energy at the time. In the end, we were all happy with the finished result! Lennox Masonry of Victoria, BC has been proudly serving both Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands for over a decade. - Masonry Restoration: All You Need To Know
What is masonry restoration? Restoring masonry is the act of breathing new life into that which has lost its original look and feel. Day after day, decade after decade, the sheen of new materials fades and if a regiment of maintenance does not take place, the elements take hold and don’t let go. Restoring masonry structures entails diagnosing and treating the core issues that are so often associated with buildings that have been left to their own devices… moisture, moisture, moisture!!! Restoration services can range from surface cleaning to repointing the mortar between stones or bricks, and even rebuilding portions of the masonry itself. A heritage brick chimney in Victoria, BC after being rebuilt by Lennox Masonry . The 100+ year old brick chimney was spalling and falling apart due to moisture issues. What role does moisture play in the overall health of a masonry building? Brick and stone are fantastic at pulling in and expelling moisture. However, if they become overly saturated and are unable to release the excess, spalling occurs and the structure continues to become compromised. There are a variety of reasons as to why moisture may be building up in and behind masonry walls. Examining the mortar that binds the structure together is usually the best indicator as to how and why moisture isn’t being properly expelled from the masonry. Historical Restoration: Masonry restoration plays a pivotal role in preserving historical buildings and maintaining their structural integrity. Across Victoria, BC, a city rich in architectural heritage, various techniques are employed to ensure that historic masonry remains resilient against time and environmental factors. Let's delve into some of the essential techniques used in masonry restoration, highlighting their importance and application. What Does Masonry Restoration Entail: Masonry restoration involves repairing, cleaning, and preserving masonry structures, such as brick and stone walls, chimneys, and facades. These structures often exhibit signs of wear and deterioration over time due to weathering, pollution, and other environmental factors. Masonry restoration aims not only to repair visible damage but also to maintain the historical authenticity and structural stability of the building. Techniques Used in Masonry Restoration Cleaning: Cleaning is often the first step in masonry restoration. Over the years, masonry surfaces accumulate dirt, grime, moss, lichen, graffiti, and pollutants that can obscure their original appearance and accelerate deterioration. Here at Lennox Masonry , we use a non-abrasive approach to cleaning masonry which involves low-water volume and high pressure steam to remove any and all undesirables from the surface of masonry. This technique does not overly saturate the stone, brick, or mortar while completely cleaning the surface. Repointing: Repointing, or tuckpointing, is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between masonry joints and replacing it with fresh mortar. This technique not only enhances the aesthetics of the masonry but also prevents water infiltration and structural damage. Lennox Masonry uses mortar analysis and mortar matching techniques to re-create traditional lime-based mortars and restore masonry buildings to their former glory. - Building The Ross Bay Cemetery Memorial Entrance
In the heart of Victoria, BC lies one of the oldest surviving Victorian cemeteries and landscape designs in British Columbia: the Ross Bay Cemetery. The cemetery was officially opened in 1872 and overlooks both the Salish Sea and the Olympic Mountain Range. It spans nearly 28 acres and is a public park with an abundance of tree varieties and many pathways to explore throughout. Ross Bay Cemetery is currently maintained by the City of Victoria and the Old Cemeteries Society which work in cooperation to restore the landscape and the graves amongst it. In 2022, Lennox Masonry was given the opportunity to co-design and build, while corroborating with both the City of Victoria and the Old Cemetery Society, an official memorial entrance for the cemetery. With the approval of a Heritage Alteration Permit, work began in the summer of 2022 with the excavation of the site, as well as forming and pouring the concrete pillars. Shortly after the pillars and the asphalt were fully cured, the granite cladding for the pillars was ready for installation. Lennox Masonry was responsible for designing and cutting the granite cladding to suit the project specifications and requirements, as well as applying the cladding to the pillars. Once the cladding was set, the only remaining step was to install the gates, fencing, and plaques. The construction of the memorial entrance to Ross Bay Cemetery by Lennox Masonry, the City of Victoria, and the the Old Cemeteries Society is a great example of craftsmanship, collaboration, and community engagement. It is vital to preserve and celebrate the landmarks that connect us to our collective heritage. The memorial entrance now stands as a tribute to the past and an entranceway to our collective future as a community.
