Creative Ideas For Stone Walls in Victoria, BC

A hole in a stone wall by Lennox Masonry of Victoria BC
An opening I created in a sandstone wall that was part of an outdoor living space we designed and built.

Not far from where I grew up, there was a stone wall that bordered along the concrete walkway which was home to a young family, including kids around my age. They would leave their toys and trinkets atop the concrete cap of the stone wall for all to see. Action figures and dolls left in positions which lent the impression that a battle of colossal proportions was underway yet paused until the hands that moved them returned. Along that wall there was an area in which a large stone had fallen out and onto the grass below. The stone had yet to be mortared back in place and the children decided to make good use of the cavity by turning it into a miniature gnome and fairy home. I was so enthralled with the display every time I walked past that I nearly walked into the trees on the other side of the walkway while trying to keep up with my siblings. It seemed like such a magical wall and space. A world onto itself.

Fast forward 10 years later and I began building my first stone walls for a small family-owned masonry company. Though, as much as I wanted to create similar spaces and features within the stone wall that so captured my imagination as a kid, the projects I was working on were not my own, and thus my creativity was stifled... for the time being! Fast forward another 10 years and I was in a place where I felt confident and ready to fully explore my creative side while designing and building stone walls for my very own clients. So, of course, I began putting in as many nooks and crannies as I could without compromising the integrity of the stone walls I built.

On occasion, I revisit some of the stone walls I've built in the Victoria, BC area and am always pleasantly surprised to find toys, candles, and other trinkets stuffed inside the cavities.
